Girl burnt alive by family over marriage refusal

Gujrat (Staff Report): A young girl was allegedly set ablaze by her family in Gujrat for refusing to marry within the community.

Police stated that Maria, 22-year-old, a resident of Sok Kalan area, refused to marry within community in opposition to her family's wish.

Upon her refusal, the girl's maternal grandfather, uncle, mother and brother allegedly doused her with petrol and burnt her alive.

She was immediately shifted to nearby hospital in critical condition.

According to doctors, 80 per cent of her body was burnt in the incident.

The girl recorded her statement to police before breathing her last, accusing her grandfather and other members of the family of burning her.

Police have arrested the suspects and filed a case against them under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
