Panama case: SC forms special bench to monitor JIT’s proceedings

Islamabad (Staff Report): Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar has constituted a special bench for the implementation of SC verdict on Panama case and monitor the working of the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) which will probe the Sharif family’s alleged corruption.

The special bench – comprising Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan, Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed, and Justice Ejazul Ahsan – will begin its hearings on Wednesday.

In its April 20 judgment, the apex court had ordered the formation of the JIT to probe offshore assets of the prime minister and his two sons. The JIT, according to the court ruling, would comprise representatives from the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), Security and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP), FIA as well as officials from the MI and ISI.

Meanwhile, Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar also approved the appointment of Additional Registrar Muhammad Ali as the coordinator between the JIT and the SC bench on the case.

The JIT shall submit biweekly reports before a special bench – a request for its formation is part of the judgement. It has also been given a sixty-day deadline to file its final report.
