US denounces attack on Pakistani embassy in Kabul

Washington (Web Desk): The United States (US) on Friday condemned the attack on the Pakistani Embassy in Kabul targeting its head of mission, Ubaid Nizamani, and called for a full investigation.

"We offer our sympathies and wish a quick recovery to those affected by the violence," State Department Spokesperson Ned Price said in press conference.

"The United States is deeply concerned by the attack on a foreign diplomat, and we call for a full and transparent investigation," he added.

Earlier, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) also issued a press statement condemning in "the strongest terms" Friday’s terrorist attack on the Pakistan's embassy in Kabul that targeted the Head of the Mission and called for ensuring the safety of diplomatic and consular premises.

The 15-member Council, acting by consensus, also wished a speedy and full recovery to the security guard who was critically injured in the “reprehensible” attack.

"The members of the Security Council called on all relevant parties to respect and ensure the safety and security of diplomatic and consular premises and personnel of United Nations Member States," it said.

The UNSC members underlined the need to hold perpetrators, organizers, financiers, and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice.

They urged all States, in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant UNSC resolutions, to cooperate actively with all relevant authorities.

On Friday, Pakistan’s embassy in Kabul came under attack on Friday and Chargé d’Affaires to Afghanistan Ubaidur Rehman Nizamani survived an assassination bid.

According to a press release by the Foreign Office (FO), the embassy compound came under attack while Nizamani remained safe.

"A security guard, Sepoy Israr Mohammad, was “critically injured” in the attack while protecting the mission head," the statement said.

The press release said Pakistan “strongly condemns” the assassination attempt against Nizamani and the attack on the embassy compound.
