Punjab governor’s removal: Imran Khan urges SC to take notice of ‘blatant violation’ of Constitution

Islamabad (Staff Report/Agencies): Former prime minister Imran Khan on Tuesday urged the Supreme Court to take notice of a federal government’s notification regarding Punjab Governor Omar Sarfraz Cheema’s removal from his office.

In a statement, The PTI chairman urged the apex court to take “immediate notice of the blatant violation of the Constitution and the law in Punjab”.

“Imported puppets are stirring up constitutional anarchy and chaos in Punjab,” the former PM said and added, “First, a criminal puppet was imposed on the province as a chief minister through a ghost election. Now, keeping all constitutional requirements aside, the office of the president has been insulted.”

He said the “blatant violation” of the Constitution in Punjab was being watched in silence, therefore, the Supreme Court must take suo motu notice of the situation, given its sensitivity.

On Tuesday, after President Alvi’s rejection to approve Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s summary to remove Omar Sarfraz Cheema from his post, the federal government issued a notification that Omar Cheema has been denotified as Punjab governor.

On the other hand, Cheema said the summary for his removal sent by the premier to the president was rejected due to “exceptional circumstances” but the Cabinet Division still issued the notification for his removal. He termed the notification unconstitutional.
