Army should not be made controversial, says President Alvi

Lahore (Staff Report/Agencies): President Dr Arif Alvi has said that Pakistan Army is the guarantor of national security and it should not be made controversial.

Talking to the media at the Governor House in Lahore on Friday, President Alvi said that all stakeholders needed to sit together and chalk out a way forward to defuse the rising polarisation in the country.

“There is a need to initiate a “consultative process” to bring all the important stakeholders of the country to a negotiation table,” he said added, “However, the constitutional role of a president does not allow him to officially reach out to the stakeholders.”

Dr Alvi also offered to mediate between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and former premier Imran Khan for the sake of the country.

The president’s statement comes days after PTI leader Shahbaz Gill was arrested by the Islamabad police on charges of sedition.
