COVID-19: Pakistan reports 615 new infections, 14 deaths in last 24 hours

Lahore/Quetta/Karachi/Peshawar (Staff Report/Agencies): The total number of recovered COVID-19 patients in Pakistan reached 305,080 on Wednesday after another 471 virus recoveries were reported during the last 24 hours.

Over the last twenty four hours, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases rose to 320,463 after 615 new coronavirus cases surfaced in the country.

Overall, 140,756 cases were reported in Sindh, 101,014 in Punjab, 38,427 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 15,577 in Balochistan, 17,526 in Islamabad, 3,965 in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and 3,198 in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).

According to the government's Covid-19 portal, the death toll related to coronavirus has reached 6,601 with 14 fatalities reported during the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, Federal Minister for Planning and Developing Asad Umar said coronavirus cases are increasing in some parts of the country due to social gatherings and non-compliance of standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Talking to a private news channel, the minister said instructions have been issued to provincial governments to ensure the implementation of SOPs to contain the spread of the virus.

He urged opposition parties to avoid large gatherings and to ensure SOPs are followed in public meetings.

"The government has no fear about public meetings of the opposition but security and safety of the people is a serious concern," the minister said.

It is pertinent to mention that the global coronavirus cases have reportedly surpassed 37.7 million and death toll tops 1.07 million.
