COVID-19: Pakistan reports 5,908 new cases, 157 deaths in last 24 hours

Lahore/Quetta/Karachi/Peshawar (Staff Report/Agencies): The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Pakistan rose to 790,016 on Saturday after 5,908 new coronavirus cases surfaced in the country during the last 24 hours.

Overall 276,670 cases were confirmed in Sindh, 285,542 in Punjab, 112,140 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 21,477 in Balochistan, 72,613 in Islamabad 5,247 in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and 16,327 in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).

According to the government's COVID-19 portal, the death toll related to coronavirus has reached to 16,999 with 157 fatalities reported during the last 24 hours.

Over the last twenty four hours, total number of recovered COVID-19 patients across the country reached 686,488 after another 4,198 virus recoveries were reported.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Army has mobilized to enforce coronavirus SOPs in the federal capital after Prime Minister Imran Khan sought its help in curbing the virus's spread.

Officials of the Islamabad administration visited various areas in the city on Friday with army personnel in tow to enforce implementation of COVID-19 protocols.

Earlier on Friday, Prime Minister Imran Khan said that the help of Pakistan Army has been sought to support the law enforcement agencies in ensuring compliance to the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for curbing the novel coronavirus.

Addressing the nation after chairing a meeting of National Command and Operation Center (NCOC) in Islamabad, the premier appealed to the people to strictly follow the SOPs to avoid complete lockdown.

“If people do not comply with health guidelines and situation further deteriorates, we will have to impose lockdowns in the cities,” PM Khan warned.

It is pertinent to mention that the global coronavirus cases have reportedly surpassed 144.358 million and death toll tops 3.066 million.
