IHC to hear Nawaz, NAB pleas in Al-Azizia reference on Feb 18

Islamabad (Staff Report/Agencies): The Islamabad High Court (IHC) will hear the pleas filed by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) against the Al-Azizia Steel Mills reference verdict on February 18.

A two-member bench comprising Justice Amir Farooq and Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kiyani will hear the pleas challenging the verdicts of an accountability court in Al-Azizia Steel Mills and Flagship Investment corruption references.

The court also accepted Nawaz's request to submit additional documents in the case.

Nawaz was sentenced to seven years in prison by an accountability court in Al-Azizia reference and fined Rs1.5 billion, in a verdict announced on December 24. He was acquitted in the Flagship corruption reference.

Earlier, the IHC accepted the plea of former premier Nawaz Sharif to fix earliest possible date for hearing his appeal against the Al Azizia reference verdict.

The former premier had filed a supplementary petition in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) against the verdict in Al Azizia reference.

The Former PM had filed an appeal against the punishment and also submitted a petition seeking suspension of the sentence.

On December 24, the accountability court 2 of Islamabad had handed a seven-year imprisonment to Nawaz Sharif along with a fine of Rs1.5 billion and $ 25 million in the Al Azizia Steel Mills/ Hill Metal Establishment reference. It had, however, acquitted him in the Flagship Investment reference.
