Islamabad (Web Desk): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday said that the “tragic and heart-rending” events of May 9 are a wake-up call for us.
The premier said this in a statement shared on his Twitter handle while referring to the violent protests that broke out across the country following the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman and former premier Imran Khan on May 9.
“Today the nation is solemnly observing Youm-i-Takreem Shuhada-i-Pakistan to pay its glowing tributes to our heroes, ghazis, and martyrs and express its unflinching solidarity with their families,” PM Shehbaz said
The prime minister further said, "I don’t see the tragic incidents of May 9 as merely a protest that became violent. The designs of those who planned them were actually very sinister."
He said that there was a clear build-up to the shameful incidents, as the whole nation witnessed in utter disbelief and a state of shock how the lust of some people for power made them do what was never done before.
"By targeting, desecrating and destroying the monuments of shuhada, and attacking the very symbols of the state, the miscreants attacked the idea and identity of Pakistan and gave the enemies of the country reasons to celebrate," PM Shehbaz said.
"Our nation knows how to protect the honour of their martyrs. The tragic and heart-rending events of May 9 are a wake-up call for us. We have to identify and expose all such people who want to destroy the foundations of Pakistan. May 9 has drawn up a dividing line between the protectors and builders of Pakistan and those who wish to weaken it," he said.
PM Shehbaz said that today the nation revived and reiterated its pledge to uphold the honour and respect of the country’s martyrs.
"The essence of Pakistan’s existence lies in the spiritual covenant between its people and the martyrs. The creation of Pakistan is a miracle of the 20th century and its edifice stands on the sure foundation of their sacred blood. We will never be able to thank them enough," he said.

The premier’s remarks come as the nation is observing Youm-e-Takreem Shuhada-e-Pakistan'. today (Thursday), to pay rich tribute to the martyrs who laid their lives while protecting the motherland and its people.
The main event was held at the General Headquarters (GHQ), Rawalpindi with Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir as the chief guest.
During the ceremony, rich tributes were paid to the martyrs and prominent personalities laid flowers at the martyrs' monument.
Former COAS Gen (retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa, former chairman joint chiefs of staff committee Gen (retd) Nadeem Raza, Pakistan cricket team captain Babar Azam, Mufti Muneeb ur Rehman and other members of the society were also present at the event.
Meanwhile, in connection with Youm-e-Takreem Shuhada e Pakistan, separate ceremonies were held at Naval and Pakistan Air Force (PAF) Headquarters in Islamabad.
At the Naval headquarters, Naval Chief Amjad Khan Niazai laid floral wreath at the martyrs' monument.
At the PAF headquarters, Air Chief Zaheer Ahmad Babar laid floral wreath at the martyrs' monument.
A ceremony was also held at the JS Headquarters Rawalpindi where floral wreaths were laid at the martyrs' monument.
In remembrance of the courageous heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice, numerous events featuring Quran khwani and prayers are being organised throughout the country.
These gatherings will serve as a platform for the nation to honour the indomitable spirit and unwavering dedication of the martyrs, hailing from Pakistan Army, Rangers, Frontier Corps, Frontier Constabulary, police, and other law enforcement agencies.
Several commemorative ceremonies will be held at the martyrs' memorials to pay tribute to them.
