Pakistan to announce strategy if India violates IWT

Islamabad (Web Desk): Foreign Office spokesman Nafees Zakaria alleged that Pakistan was closely analyzing the evolving situation of Indian water aggression and it would declare its strategy in case of any violation of Indus Waters Treaty (IWT).

While emphasizing that no country could abrogate the treaty, at the weekly news briefing in Islamabad the spokesperson said, “Pakistan has emphatically stated that Indus Waters Treaty cannot be altered or suspended unilaterally.”

He added that we will evaluate India’s activities within the framework of the Indus Waters Treaty.

Nafees Zakaria said that to resolve the dispute regarding implementation of the treaty arbitration mechanism could be one of the best options to utilize. He said we resolved many IWT disputes amicably in the past.

The FO spokesman said as Pakistan’s prime minister envisioned we were pursuing the policy of peaceful neighborhood to resolve all outstanding issues amicably, including Kashmir with India.

According to FO, Kashmir dispute is bone of contention between Pakistan and India although the international powers must play due role to settle the longstanding issue.
