COVID-19: Pakistan reports 768 new cases, 19 deaths in last 24 hours

Lahore/Quetta/Karachi/Peshawar (Staff Report/Agencies): The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Pakistan rose to 1,511,754 on Thursday after 768 new cases surfaced in the country during the last 24 hours.

Overall 568,928 cases were confirmed in Sindh, 502,012 in Punjab, 216,386 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 35,357 in Balochistan, 134,496 in Islamabad, 11,531 in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and 43,044 in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).

As per the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) data, 35,281 tests were conducted in last 24 hours while positivity ratio remained 2.17%.

According to the government's COVID-19 portal, the death toll related to coronavirus has reached to 30,218 with 22 fatalities reported during the last 24 hours.

Over the last twenty four hours, total number of recovered COVID-19 patients across the country reached 1,449,060 after another 3,815 virus recoveries were reported.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said that COVID-19 pandemic has taken a dire toll on mental health.

The world health body indicated that cases of anxiety and depression had swelled by over 25 per cent globally.

In a fresh scientific brief, the WHO also found that the COVID-19 crisis had in many cases significantly impeded access to mental health services and raised concerns about increases in suicidal behaviour, a foreign news agency reported.

The brief, which was based on an umbrella review of a vast number of studies, determined that the world saw a 27.6pc increase in cases of major depressive disorder in 2020 alone.

During the first year of the pandemic, there was also a 25.6pc hike in cases of anxiety disorders worldwide, it found.

It is pertinent to mention that the global coronavirus cases have reportedly surpassed 440,661 million and death toll tops 5,993,167.
