LHC stops ECP from removing Imran Khan as PTI chief

Lahore (Web Desk): The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Thursday barred the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) from removing Imran Khan as the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) Chairman.

The former prime minister filed a petition in the high court against the electoral watchdog’s case.

On December 5, 2022, ECP had initiated the process to remove Imran Khan as the PTI chairman in the light of its verdict in the Toshakhana case.

LHC judge Justice Jawad Hassan heard Khan's plea and barred the commission from removing the ex-premier from his chairmanship.

Additionally, the court sought a response from the ECP regarding its proceedings.

In his petition, the PTI chief maintained that the ECP initiated the process for his removal as the party chair after his disqualification from the National Assembly's NA-95 seat.

The petition read that the ECP issued the notice over allegedly submitting a "false statement"; however, it cannot play the role of a tribunal.
