COVID-19: Pakistan reports 1,517 new cases, 17 deaths in last 24 hours

Lahore/Quetta/Karachi/Peshawar (Staff Report/Agencies): The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Pakistan rose to 966,007 on Wednesday after 1,517 new coronavirus cases surfaced in the country during the last 24 hours.

Overall 342,228 cases were confirmed in Sindh, 347,180 in Punjab, 138,727 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 27,502 in Balochistan 83,155 in Islamabad, 6,574 in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and 20,641 in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).

As per National Command and Operation (NCOC) data, 46,287 tests were conducted while positivity ratio remained 3.27%.

According to the government's COVID-19 portal, the death toll related to coronavirus has reached to 22,469 with 17 fatalities reported during the last 24 hours.

Over the last twenty four hours, total number of recovered COVID-19 patients across the country reached 909,525 after another 877 virus recoveries were reported.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Imran Khan has congratulated the NCOC, Ehsaas Team and State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) for effective response to COVID-19 pandemic.

In a tweet on Wednesday, the premier appreciated the government departments and thanked the Almighty for His blessings.

“Congratulations to NCOC members, Ehsaas team & State Bank of Pakistan for effective response to Covid 19 pandemic; and above all thanks to the mercy of Almighty Allah,” PM Imran said.

The prime minister also shared Economist magazine's normalcy index which declares Pakistan best performing countries for handling Covid-19.

With a score of 84.4, Pakistan ranks third amongst 50 countries tracked by the Economist magazine for return to pre pandemic life.

Neighbouring India has a score of 46.5, ranking it near the bottom in 48th position.

It is pertinent to mention that the global coronavirus cases have reportedly surpassed 185.428 million and death toll tops 4,010,244.
