Sindh LG polls:  PPP sweeps Hyderabad, leading the race in Karachi, say unofficial results

Karachi (Staff Report/Agencies): The unofficial results of the second phase of the local government elections, which held in two divisions of Sindh on Sunday, shows that the ruling Pakistan People’s Party is leading the race in Karachi and has been emerged the first time in a position to appoint its mayor in Sindh’s second-largest city.

The unofficial results started pouring in from several districts, showing PPP bagging polls in Karachi’s Malir district. The ruling also bagged 29 seats of union committee chairman and vice chairman, sweeping the polls in Gadap, Malir, and Ibrahim Hyderi.

JI is leading from the front in Gulshan-i-Hadeed’s UC-4 for chairman and vice chairman.

Meanwhile, PTI suffered a setback in Karachi local bodies polls when Khurram Sher Zaman — who was considered the party’s candidate for the top slot of the mayor — lost to PPP’s Najmi Alam in Saddar.

However, the results came a question mark when contesting parties accused the ruling PPP of vote rigging and criticised the Election Commission of Pakistan as a “helpless and silent spectator”.

“I am closely monitoring the results of each polling station, ward and UCs [union councils],” PTI Sindh president Syed Ali Haider Zaidi said in statement.

Despite the electoral watchdog’s orders, the results have not been completed till Monday morning.
