COVID-19: Pakistan reports 3,179 new infections, 87 deaths in last 24 hours

Lahore/Quetta/Karachi/Peshawar (Staff Report/Agencies): The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Pakistan rose to 454,673 on Saturday after 3,179 new coronavirus cases surfaced in the country during the last 24 hours.

Overall, 202,983 cases were reported in Sindh, 130,706 in Punjab, 54,448 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 17,880 in Balochistan, 35,905 in Islamabad, 4,814 in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and 7,937 in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).

According to the government's Covid-19 portal, the death toll related to coronavirus has reached to 9,250 with 87 fatalities reported during the last 24 hours.

Over the last twenty four hours, total number of recovered COVID-19 patients across the country reached 404,501 after another 4,649 virus recoveries were reported.

Meanwhile, Federal Minister for Planning and Development and NCOC chief Asad Umar has tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

"Just got my covid test result and it is positive. Will be isolating at home," the NCOC chief tweeted.

On December 19, India’s coronavirus tally crossed the 10 million mark on Saturday, the world’s second highest, even though the number of new daily cases has fallen sharply since a mid-September peak. However, after hitting a peak of nearly 98,000 cases in September, daily cases are now down to an average of 27,000.

It is pertinent to mention that the global coronavirus cases have reportedly surpassed 73.627 million and death toll tops 1.654 million.
