COVID-19: Pakistan reports 2,724 new cases, 65 deaths in last 24 hours

Lahore/Quetta/Karachi/Peshawar (Staff Report/Agencies): The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Pakistan rose to 908,576 on Wednesday after 2,724 new coronavirus cases surfaced in the country during the last 24 hours.

Overall 311,766 cases were confirmed in Sindh, 336,315 in Punjab, 130,644 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 24,733 in Balochistan, 80,662 in Islamabad, 5,516 in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and 18,940 in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).

As per National Command and Operation (NCOC) data, 59,076 tests were conducted while positivity ratio remained 4.61%.

According to the government's COVID-19 portal, the death toll related to coronavirus has reached to 20,465 with 65 fatalities reported during the last 24 hours.

Over the last twenty four hours, total number of recovered COVID-19 patients across the country reached 827,843 after another 4,686 virus recoveries were reported.

Meanwhile, the Punjab government announced the staggered reopening of schools in the remaining districts of the province from June 7 amid the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a tweet on Tuesday Provincial Education Minister Murad Raas said, “The issue of Public and Private schools that are still closed in Districts of Punjab was discussed in the last NCOC meeting”.

“The remaining Districts will have a staggered approach opening from Monday June 7th, 2021. Please follow SOPs issued by the Government,” he added.

Earlier, all private and public educational institutions reopened in selected districts from May 24.

It is pertinent to mention that the global coronavirus cases have reportedly surpassed 167.011 million and death toll tops 3.472 million.
