Lahore/Quetta/Karachi/Peshawar (Staff Report/Agencies): Pakistan's COVID-19 death toll crossed the 10,000 mark on Wednesday, according to the data shared by the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC).
The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Pakistan rose to 477,240 on Wednesday after 2,155 new coronavirus cases surfaced in the country during the last 24 hours.
Overall, 213,193 cases were confirmed in Sindh, 137,295 in Punjab, 57,982 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 18,118 in Balochistan, 37,556 in Islamabad, 4,855 in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and 8,241 in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).
According to the government's COVID-19 portal, the death toll related to coronavirus has reached to 10,047 with 55 fatalities reported during the last 24 hours.
Over the last twenty four hours, total number of recovered COVID-19 patients across the country reached 430,113 after another 4,619 virus recoveries were reported.
Meanwhile, Pakistan on Tuesday reported three confirmed cases of UK Covid-19 variant in Karachi.
In a statement, Sindh Health Department said that the new COVID-19 variant has been identified in samples taken from three passengers who recently returned from Britain.
Samples of 12 UK returnees were taken for genotyping out of which six tested positive for the COVID-19, it read and added that three showed the new variant for the COVID-19 in the first phase of testing.
On December 26, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said that it was “in close contact with UK officials on the new COVID19 virus variant” and promised to update governments and the public as more is learned.
It is pertinent to mention that the global coronavirus cases have reportedly surpassed 80.8 million and death toll tops 1.7 million.
