New local bodies system to be introduced in 3 months: minister

Islamabad (Staff Report): Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry has said that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-led government will introduce a new local bodies system in the country within three months.

He said Prime Minister Imran Khan would present draft of new local bodies system on Sunday aimed at changing district and tehsil level system to facilitate the people.

The minister said negotiations with opposition regarding new local bodies bill are underway and government would try to convince PPP and PML-N to support that bill.

On Monday, the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) announced to launch a crackdown against electricity theft.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the ECC chaired by Finance Minister Asad Umar. The committee also decided to disconnect electricity connections of consumers who fail to pay bills for three months.

The ECC also announced to take immediate action against power-sector defaulters including ministries and government departments. The meeting decided to install prepaid electricity meters.

Meanwhile, the meeting decided to immediately resume operations of fertiliser factories. It was decided during the meeting that the domestic demand for fertiliser will be fulfilled from the presently-inoperative factories.

It was also decided that an operational and financial audit of energy sector will be conducted.

The committee further said that the matter of circular debt will be presented before PM Khan.
