President, PM express grief over loss of human lives in earthquake

Islamabad (Web Desk): President Dr Arif Alvi and Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday expressed grief and sorrow over the loss of human lives in earthquake in Balochistan's Harnai area.

In a message on Twitter, President Dr Arif Alvi condoled with the bereaved families and prayed for the departed souls.

Praying for the early recovery of those injured, the president was confident that the national and provincial disaster management authorities would provide quick relief to the affected people.

Prime Minister Imran Khan also expressed deep grief and sorrow over the loss of precious lives in the earthquake. He condoled with the families who lost their loved ones in the quake.

After receiving the initial report on quake-cause losses, the premier directed all federal departments to fully assist Balochistan government in provision of relief to the earthquake victims.

In a tweet, the prime minister said he has ordered an immediate assistance on an emergency basis for the earthquake victims of Harnai.

He also called for an immediate assessment of the damage for timely relief and compensation.

Meanwhile, Opposition Leader in the National Assembly and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president Shehbaz Sharif also expressed grief over the deaths of people in Balochistan earthquake.

In a post on Twitter, the PML-N leader stated, “Sad over the loss of precious lives due to earthquake in Balochistan last night. My profound condolences and prayers go out to the affected families.”

“The authorities must act on war footing to rehabilitate those affected by this disaster,” he said.

Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar has also expressed deep sorrow over loss of precious human lives in earthquake.

Moreover, Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmad has said the civil armed forces are cooperating with the local administration in extending help to the quake victims of Balochistan.

In a statement, he said Frontier Corps Balochistan (North) is fully participating in the rescue efforts.  He said all resources are being utilized to carry out rescue and relief work in Harnai and adjoining areas.

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Chaudhary Fawad Hussain has assured government's full cooperation to the quake affected people of Balochistan.

He expressed deep grief and sorrow over the loss of lives in the tremor and condoled with the bereaved families.

At least twenty people lost their lives and more than 300 others were injured after a strong earthquake jolted the various parts of Balochistan on wee hours of Thursday.

According to National Seismic Monitoring Centre the magnitude of the quake was measured at 5.9 on the Richter scale. The epicenter of the quake was located in Harnai at the depth of 15 kilometres.

The tremor was also felt in Sibi, Pishin, Muslim Bagh, Qila Saifullah Kachlak, Harnai and surrounding areas.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said that most of the deceased were children.

A medical emergency had been declared at the Civil Hospital Quetta where doctors and other paramedical staff have been recalled on an emergency basis, the MS of the hospital said.

Deputy Commissioner of Harnai said roofs and walls of dozens of houses collapsed in Harnai and Shahrag, trapping several people under the debris. Dozens of public and private buildings were also damaged in parts of Balochistan.
