Elections 2024: Pakistan closes border crossings with Afghanistan, Iran

Islamabad (Web Desk): Border crossings with Afghanistan and Iran would remain closed both for cargo and pedestrians to ensure full security during the general elections being held today.

“To ensure full secu­rity during the general elections to be held in Pa­kistan on 8 Feb 2024, border crossings with Af­ghanistan and Iran, would remain closed both for cargo and pedestrians. Normal operations would resume on 9 February 2024,” Foreign Office (FO) Spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said in a statement.

Polling for general elections of National Assembly and four provincial assemblies is underway and it will continue till 5:00 pm without any break.

Over 128 million registered voters will cast vote for the national and provincial assemblies.

According to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), 90,777 polling stations have been established nationwide. Of these, 44,000 polling stations have been declared normal, 29,985 sensitive and 16,766 highly sensitive.

Around 6,50,000 security personnel have been deployed across the country to maintain law and order for the smooth and fair electoral process. These include the personnel of police, civil armed forces and the armed forces, the Radio Pakistan reported.

Under a three-tiered system, the personnel of the armed forces will perform duties outside the polling stations.
