International Mountain Day observed

Islamabad (Web Desk): International Mountain Day is being observed (today) Monday in all over the world, including Pakistan, with the aim at raising awareness to improve the condition of mountains and populations living near mountains and to maintain their natural environment.

The theme of this year is 'Restoring Mountain Ecosystems'.

In 2001, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) had adopted a resolution to observe International Mountain Day every year on 11th December to recognise the importance of mountains.

It is pertinent to mention that eight of the sixteen highest mountain peaks in the world are in Pakistan.

There are five high snow peaks of 26 thousand feet in Pakistan while the world 2nd highest peak, K-2, and 9th highest peak Nanga Parbat are also located in Pakistan.
