Nawaz, Maryam and Safdar challenge Avenfield verdict in LHC

Lahore (Staff Report): Former Premier Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law captain (r) Safdar have filed a petition in Lahore High Court (LHC), challenging their conviction in the Avenfield case.

The petition states that the three times elected Prime Minister (PM) of the country was being punished on the basis of a law voided after the 18th amendment.

The petitioner, advocate A K Dogar asked the Lahore High Court (LHC) to dismiss the decision against Sharifs.

On Tuesday the Interior Ministry placed ousted Nawaz and Maryam Nawaz’s name on Exit Control List (ECL).

Following the Avenfield Reference verdict announced by the accountability court, National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had requested the ministry to put Nawaz and Maryam on the ECL.

It is pertinent here to mention that, on February 11 and again on June 11, the anti-graft watchdog had asked interior ministry to put names of Sharifs on ECL.

NAB’s both requests were turned down and Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz left the country on June 14 and they are still in London.

On Friday, the accountability court of Islamabad awarded Mr Safdar one-year imprisonment in the case.

The court awarded ousted premier to 10 years and Maryam Nawaz to 7 years imprisonment in the Avenfield corruption reference, while Capt (retd) Safdar will also face one year jail term in the case.

Accountability Court-I Judge Mohammad Bashir announced the verdict.

Moreover, Nawaz and Maryam were also fined 8 and 2 million pounds respectively.

The court ordered to confiscate the property in question, suggesting the government to do legislation to bring plundered money back to the country.

Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Safdar have been in London to Kulsoom Nawaz, who is under medical treatment there.
