Senate elections: Scrutiny of nomination papers concludes today

Islamabad (Web Desk): Scrutiny of nomination papers filed for 48 vacant seats of the Senate is underway and will conclude today (Tuesday).

According to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the returning officer’s deadline to file appeals against the acceptance or rejection of nomination papers is March 21.

The tribunal is scheduled to dispose of appeals by March 25.

Revised lists of the candidates will be issued on March 26 while the candidates can withdraw their nomination papers by March 27.

As per the schedule, in the federal capital, members of the National Assembly will elect members of the Senate against one general seat and one seat for technocrats including Ulema.

Meanwhile, members of the four provincial assemblies will elect Senators for 7 general seats, 2 women seats, and 2 seats for technocrats including Ulema from each province, as well as one seat for non-Muslims from both Punjab and Sindh provinces.

These seats became vacant after expiration of the term of the incumbent members of the upper house of Parliament on March 11.
