PTI demands immediate resignation of CEC Raja, says Barrister Gohar

Rawalpindi (Web Desk): The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Monday demanded immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar
Sultan Raja saying that he failed to hold general elections in a free, fair and transparent manner.

Speaking to newsmen outside Adiala Jail Barrister Gohar Khan said, “After meeting Khan sahib today, the PTI demands that the CEC resign, he has no right to stay in the position for a single day.”

He said that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) failed to fulfil its responsibility in “every step of the way”.

Gohar said that Form 45s were the ECP’s responsibility and the returning officers were bound to announce results according to these documents.

“But under the incumbent chief election commissioner this cannot happen," the PTI leader said.

He demanded that all the inquiries into poll discrepancies should be impartial and without any interference.

“We want the election results to be in accordance with the mandate of the public,” Gohar added.

The PTI leader warned that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme would be “damaged” if the poll results were not in accordance with Form 45s.

Earlie today, Jamaat-e-Islami’s (JI) Senator Mushtaq Ahmed also called for the resignation of CEC Raja over alleged rigging in the February 8 elections.

Speaking during the Senate session, he said that the CEC should be tried under article 6 due to the alleged failure to conduct transparent general elections on February 8.

He said that the ECP was given Rs50 billion from the national exchequer but it failed to hold transparent polls.

Senator Musthaq Ahmad said that electoral body committed treason for which it should seek an apology from the nation.

He also called for the formation of a judicial commission which would conduct an inquiry of all institutions.
"The judicial commission should investigate the matter of Form 45," he maintained.

Meanwhile, the other members of the upper house of the parliament demanded the forum to hold a probe of the general elections results to ensure free and fair polls and establish respect for public mandate.

They were speaking in the Senate session following the adjournment motion moved by Senators including Muhammad Tahir Bizinjo, Sardar Muhammad Shafiq Tareen, Mushtaq Ahmed, Syed Ali Zafar and others regarding the situation arising out of the results of General Elections 2024 as a matter of national importance.
