Pakistan abstains from voting at UN emergency session on Ukraine

New York (Web Desk): Pakistan abstains from voting at the 11th Emergency session of the UN General Assembly on the Resolution on Ukraine.

Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Munir Akram, explaining the reason to abstention from voting, said Pakistan fully supports the resolution's call for respect for the principles of sovereignty, sovereign equality and territorial integrity of States and non-acquisition of territory by the threat or use of force but regretted that these principles have not been universally  applied and respected.

On the eve of the first anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution demanding that Russia end the war in Ukraine and “immediately” withdraw its forces.

In October 2022, 143 UNGA members had voted to condemn Russia’s annexation of Ukrainian territories.

Five countries, including Russia, voted against the resolution. Pakistan was among the 35 countries that had abstained.
