President meets Imran, Alvi to follow Constitution in COAS appointment process

Lahore (Staff Report/Agencies): President Dr Arif Alvi on Thursday arrived at Zaman Park to reportedly discuss the appointment of new Army chief with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan.

“Meeting between Imran Khan and President Arif Alvi lasted 45 minutes and left for Islamabad,” talking to the media outside the former premier’s residence PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry said and added that Dr Alvi and Imran Khan discussed the constitutional, political and legal issues on the army chief’s appointment.

“The President House will issue a handout in this regard between 6:30 and 7:00pm,” Chaudhry said. The handout will also share details of President Alvi's meeting with Imran Khan, he maintained.

Earlier the day, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif sent a summary to the president for appointing Lieutenant General Asim Munir as the next army chief and Lt Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC).

Lt Gen Munir will replace incumbent Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa, who will retire on November 29, while Lt Gen Mirza is set to take charge from General Nadeem Raza.
