Shujaat to remain PML-Q president, rules ECP

Islamabad (Web Desk): The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday declared Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain as the president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q).

According to details, the ECP in its ruling said that the PML-Q central working committee's move to remove Shujaat as party chief was illegal and declared it null and void.

The electoral watchdog announced its verdict on a petition filed by Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain amid ongoing tussle with his cousin Parvez Elahi over party leadership.

The decision to remove Shujaat from the party command was taken at a CWC meeting headed by Senator Kamil Ali Agha.

The meeting had also decided to oust federal minister and PML-Q General Secretary Tariq Bashir Cheema from the party.

However, Shujaat had moved the ECP against the decision by the Pervaiz Elahi function.

The ECP after hearing the plea reserved the verdict in the case on August 18, 2022.

On January 26, the PML-Q removed Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain from the position of party president during a consultative meeting held at Muslim League House at Davis Road Lahore.

The general council of the party appointed Chaudhry Wajahat Hussain as new president of the PML-Q whease Tariq Bashir Cheema was removed and Kamil Ali Agha replaced him as the party secretary general.

Meanwhile, Chaudhry Parvez Elahi was elected as unopposed party president for Punjab.

It is pertinent to mention that in July 2022, the PML-Q had decided to remove Shujaat and Cheema from their positions and hold fresh intra-patry elections.

However, Chaudhry Shujaat moved the ECP which restrained the party from holding intra-party polls.
