Islamabad: Police fire tear gas at govt employees demanding pay raise

Islamabad (Web Desk): The Islamabad police on Wednesday fired tear gas at the protesting government employees when they were marching toward Parliament House.

The capital city authorities blocked the way towards the Parliament with containers when the protesters reached the "D chowk".

As per the leadership of the protesters, they were demanding notification as they don’t want any verbal commitments. The protesters also encircled Federal Minister for Information Shibli Faraz.

At one point the protesting employees also closed the doors to the secretariat bringing the government machinery to a halt.

Meanwhile, the Islamabad police arrested at least two dozen protesting employees under Section 16 of the Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance (MPO).

Responding to the protest, Federal Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid has said that the employees want forty percent raise in their basic salaries.

He said that the authorities were in contact with the protesters and trying to resolve the matter.
