International Day for the 'Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict' observed

Islamabad (Web Desk): International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict is being observed across the globe today (Monday) across the globe including Pakistan.

The theme of this year's day is "Bridging the gender digital divide to prevent, address and respond to conflict-related sexual violence".

The day is commemorated every year to mark the date of the unanimous adoption of the first United Nations UN Security Council (UNSC) resolution to recognize conflict-related sexual violence as a tactic of war and a threat to international peace and security.

On June 19, 2008, the UNSC unanimously adopted Resolution 1820, marking a significant moment in the fight against sexual violence in conflict.

The resolution categorically condemned these heinous acts, recognizing them as crimes of the utmost severity—equivalent to genocide. By doing so, the international community took a definitive stand against the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war, sending a strong message of solidarity with the victims.
