Former judge, wife challenge conviction in Tayyaba torture case

Islamabad (Staff Report): Former additional district and session judge Raja Khurram and his wife Maheen have challenged their conviction in Tayyaba torture case.

The accused on Friday pleaded in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) to form a divisional bench to hear their appeal.

On April 17, the IHC announced its verdict in the case related to torturing a child maid after over a year-long period of proceedings.

IHC Justice Aamer Farooq ruled that suspended Additional District and Sessions Judge Raja Khurram Ali Khan and his wife Maheen Zafar would serve a year each in prison for torturing the child maid under Section 328-A (cruelty to a child).

The two were also fined Rs 50,000 each for the crime of employing an underage (below 12 years of age) child.

The case of 10-year-old Tayyaba , a domestic worker at the home of former judge , first came to light after photos of the child, depicting alleged torture by her employers began circulating on social media.

Raja Khurram reached a compromise with Tayyaba 's parents on Jan 2, 2017, and a day later the child was handed over to her parents.

On Jan 4, however, the apex court took suo motu notice of the matter and directed police to investigate all aspects of the case.
