Probe launched into Sargodha University ex-CEO's death

Lahore (Staff Report): Inspector General (IG) The Punjab prisons on Saturday ordered an investigation into the incident of handcuffed body of former Sargodha University CEO Mian Javed.

According to details, the inquiry report will ascertain who put the handcuffs on him, jail authorities or the police, and whether he died at the hospital or jail.

Meanwhile, the postmortem was conducted at Mian Munshi Hospital after which Javed’s dead body was handed over to his heirs.

Mian Javed was the former CEO of the university's Lahore sub-campus and was under investigation in a corruption case.

On Friday, pictures of the deceased’s handcuffed body soon went viral on social media and prompted anger on social media over the ‘unfair treatment’ provided by the authorities.

According to jail sources, Mian Javed was handed over to police without handcuffs, however the sources said that Constable Azam handcuffed the accused.

The jail authorities claim that Javed suffered a cardiac arrest during custody and was shifted to Services Hospital in Lahore where he died.

However, pictures of the deceased official's body went viral on social media with handcuffs still on and were severely criticised.

In a statement, a NAB spokesperson said an accountability court had sent Javed on judicial remand in October shortly after his arrest.

He added that the jail officials had formally ensured that the suspect was in good health at the time they took his custody.

Professor Javed was shifted to Services Hospital on Friday after he had complained of chest pain, the statement read.

The spokesperson strongly denied the allegation that the suspect died under NAB custody.

NAB officials have expressed deep sorrow over the death of former official of the varsity, the spokesperson added.

Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar took notice of the matter of official’s handcuffed dead body. He directed the Inspector General (IG) Prisons to identify the individuals responsible for it and submit a report to him.

In October, Mian Javed along with former Sargodha University vice-chancellor Dr Mohammad Akram Chaudhry and four other university officials, was arrested by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

According to NAB authorities, the suspects were accused of allowing illegal sub-campuses of the university.
