Lahore (Web Desk): Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Saturday said that comprehensive waste management system is being introduced in all major cities of the province.
In her message on the occasion of International Day of Zero Waste being observed today, the Punjab CM said that every day should be observed as Zero Waste Day.
Maryam Nawaz said that for the first time, the Punjab government is devising a sustainable and effective system of village sanitation to provide clean environment to our future generations.
She said people should adopt eco-friendly alternatives by reducing single-use plastics.
The International Day of Zero Waste is being observed today across the globe including Pakistan.
On December 14, 2022, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a resolution to proclaim March 30 as International Day of Zero Waste.
The day highlights both the importance of bolstering waste management globally and the need to promote sustainable consumption and production patterns.
According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Every year, humanity generates between 2.1 billion and 2.3 billion tonnes of municipal solid waste. Some 2.7 billion people lack access to waste collection, 2 billion of whom live in rural areas.
Waste pollution significantly threatens human well-being, economic prosperity, and the triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution.
Without urgent action, annual municipal solid waste generation will hit 3.8 billion tonnes by 2050.
